As a smart home beginner, the first thing you need to do before even thinking of starting any kind of smart home project is by looking around your house and figure out what you would like to see automated. I think that's a key first step for sure. Some things make more sense to automate than others and it can tempting to jump in with both feet before you've thought through what you really want to do to make your life easier in a smart or connected home.
